Coventry were crowned champions of the inaugural Lagan Cup International Final following a composed and clinical performance against hosts DCU in a landmark inaugural win.
From the outset, Coventry demonstrated control and attacking intent, dictating the tempo and making effective use of possession. Captain Erin Ferguson played a central role in their performance, contributing in attack and consistently driving her side forward in key moments .
Their ability to share the scoring burden proved decisive, with multiple players making meaningful contributions as Coventry maintained pressure throughout the contest.
The standout individual performance came from Leah Conway, who was named Player of the Match following a decisive display in attack scoring a penalty and a further 7 points.
In addition, goalkeeper Anna Draper, hailing from Sean McDermotts in Birmingham, saved a penalty — a pivotal contribution to the win.
The occasion was further enhanced by a unique subplot, as siblings hailing from St. Eunan’s in Donegal lined out on opposing teams, adding a personal dimension to an already significant fixture.
The match also featured a distinctive halftime exhibition, showcasing players from a range of international locations, underlining the broader ambition of the competition to develop into a global platform .
The inaugural Lagan Cup International Final delivered a high-quality contest and set a strong foundation for the future of the competition. Coventry’s victory ensures their place in history as the first champions, while the event itself signals the continued expansion of international university football and the growth of Gaelic Games in Britain.
